the massive tax hikes and spending cuts. congress breaking in a week for the holiday. so john boehner trying to simplify things. he's asking top democrats and republica republicans to step aside so he can negotiate with the president one-on-one. it seems to be a request that everyone was able to live with. brianna keilar is live for us at the white house. if this is the case that everybody has been cleared out of the room, does that surprise you? it seems to make sense to me. >> reporter: it's not surprising at all. this is what observers of this process thought would happen all along. ultimately this was a process that would come down to president obama and house speaker john boehner brokering a deal. very much the way you saw they attempted to do during the debt ceiling debacle last year. it simplifies the problem of less cooks in the kitchen. then they will have to sell it. president obama would have to bring in democrats. john boehner would have to bring in his republicans and make sure everyone is on board. this comes on the heels of what has really been radio silence between the white

in in a moment here. just yesterday, the president met with the speaker of the house, john boehner, to talk specifically about avoiding the fiscal cliff. we are mere weeks from that, you know, basically kicking in, first of the year. that's when everyone's taxes would be going up. that happened just yesterday. and also you have all these pro union protests happening not too far away in lansing, michigan. we have a correspondent there as well. we'll talk to here. jessica yellin to you in washington. and, first things first, you think here michigan, you think the birth place of unions and you think about all these people who are very frustrated with this, everything i read, it seems to be pretty much a done deal, this right to work legislation, that the governor has indicated he would sign. these are the folks who helped elect the president not too long ago. should the president step in and go to bat for them? >> well, you know, the unions have been enormously supportive of the president as you point out. not only during this campaign, not only as foot stole jer sold helping get out the vote,

speaker john boehner actually stood in the same room. they breathed the same air, folks, and they talked and that's a big deal. especially since there's been so little of that going on lately. after the meeting, spokesman for both boehner and the president issued identical statements. that's nice. simply saying the line of communication remain open. that is promising according to former white house chief of staff erskine bowles. >> they've started to tango now and anytime you've got two guys tangoing. you've got a chance to get it done. >> how are the warnings affecting you? the american consumer. in the last few weeks, we have seen record shopping and black friday sales. we've also seen jobs numbers that are up. and today, fedex is expecting its busiest day ever. shipping about 19 million pa packages. that is about 20 packages per second. and loads of jet fuel. christine romans joining me now with more. those sound like great indicators. you're the trend lady. do the trends look like they're going to continue despite this horror show of the fiscal cliff? >> there's a bunch of things goi

the pharmacy counter. no prescription needed. >>> president obama picking up the phone to give john boehner a call after both traded fiscal cliff proposals. neither sealed a deal, so we're now 20 days away from almost $500 billion this automatic tax hikes and spending cuts. i sound like a broken record. along with the potential for a new recession. shannon travis is following the deal make. do we know what was in the proposals? >> we're getting details in drips and drabs. the white house has offered according to a source telling cnn to basically revise their revenue target. p president obama originally proposed $1.6 trillion in new revenue. he wants to raise the tax rates on the wealthiest americans. now we're being told that he's revised that number down to $1.4 trillion. that's obviously a difference of $200 billion. a democratic aide also telling cnn, i'll read the quote, that offer was coupled with a serious spending cut number with real entitlement reform. so that's from the white house side. on the counterproposal from the republicans, we don't have a lot of details on that, but from

was married to a specific rate. as for house speaker boehner who he met with yesterday at the white house, he said the gop offer remains the same, no rate hikes. however, there were more signs over the weekend that republican unity may be cracking a little bit with a number of lawmakers who want to take the tax issue off the table asap. >> there is a growing group of folks looking at this and realizes we don't have a lot of cards as it relates to the tax issue before year end. we have one house, that's it. the presidency and the senate is in the democrats' hands. a lot of people are putting forth a theory. i actually think it has merit. i actually am beginning to believe that's the best route for us to take. >> what we ought to be working on is the other 93% because even if you do what he wants to do on tax rates, you only affect 7% of the deficit. what we have done is spend ourselves into a hole. we're not going to raise taxes and borrow money and get out of it. so will i accept the tax increase as a part of a deal to actually solve our problems? yes. >> a number of recent polls show america
